Spider veins, those fine blue and red sunbursts that tend to arise on the legs, can be an unsightly blemish on the skin. Occurring near the surface of the skin, spider veins are dilated capillaries, or tiny blood vessels. Although the precise cause of spider veins is unknown, factors such as family history and hormonal shifts may play a role in their formation. Spider veins are more commonly seen in women.
At Milan Medical Spa, we treat spider veins using two state-of-the-art techniques: intense pulsed light therapy and sclerotherapy.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy for Spider Veins
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy uses concentrated light energy to target spider veins and reduce their visibility. The IPL device is placed on the treatment area and a pulse of light energy is emitted. When the light energy reaches the blood vessel, it heats the vessel wall and causes it to shrink. The damaged vein will eventually disappear. The IPL device settings can be customized to optimize results and, because of its high precision, will not damage other tissues.
During IPL treatments, you will feel a quick, “zap”of heat as the device delivers the pulsed light. However, most patients do not report pain. A typical session can be done in under an hour and patients can resume normal activities immediately.
Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins
Sclerotherapy is safe and effective treatment that introduces a special saline solution into the unwanted spider veins, prompting the vein to collapse. During the treatment, the saline solution is injected with a fine needle. The solution causes the vessel lining to close. The vein will eventually be absorbed and disappear.
You will feel a pinprick sensation during treatment, but no significant pain.
IPL or Sclerotherapy: Which is Best?
Both IPL and sclerotherapy are effective treatments for spider veins; both typically require multiple treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, and both yield permanent results. However, it should be noted that sclerotherapy is generally considered the gold standard for spider vein treatment and can be used on any skin type. In contrast, IPL tends to work best on those with lighter skin. Prior to a full treatment a skin test will be performed. Certain individuals may benefit from a combination of the two therapies.
