BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription-only medical product that contains tiny amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from a bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neuromodulator that works by temporarily blocking overactive nerve impulses that trigger excessive muscle contractions or glandular activity.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is the number one most popular non-invasive aesthetic treatment available with millions of patients successfully treated. It is a prescription medicine injected into muscles to temporarily treat moderate to severe lines and other indications on the face. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces the activity that causes those lines to form. Years of squinting, concentrating, frowning, smiling, laughing and making other facial expressions cause the skin to furrow and crease in those areas. As the skin ages, skin becomes less elastic and the moderate to severe lines that have formed remain- even when the muscles are not contracting. These are called static lines.
Caution and artistic expertise during treatment will create a naturally smoother look in the patient’s face. Treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic is a technique-sensitive procedure and should only be performed by a licensed and trained physician. It is important to note that when administered by an experienced physician, patients should not lose the ability to show expression. The results should be visibly softer and smoother but not dramatically change a person’s facial appearance or make one look as if they have had “work done”. The muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines is temporarily reduced so the patient can still make facial expressions without the wrinkles and creases being overly noticeable.
Results can begin to be noticed in 24-48 hours after treatment with a softening in the appearance of the lines and creases. The area may continue to improve over the next 10-14 days. Peak effect is usually one month out and results generally last 3-4 months on average. However, individual results may vary.
Discomfort is minimal and brief and ice packs or topical anesthetic creams can be used to numb the area prior to treatment. Arnica Montana is also recommended pre and post treatment to diminish the risk of bruising and swelling. Possible side effects can include: discomfort or pain at the injection site, minimal bruising, headache, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, swelling of the eyelids and dry eyes. However, these side effects are very rare making up less than 2 percent of the millions treated and are easily treated.
